Situated on a long, narrow site in Clifton Hill, the South Terrace House project by Sanders & King + Chan Architecture takes inspiration from its surroundings. Responding to the slope of the site, the project incorporates gentle internal and external level changes in the new extension, expanding on the grand Victorian terrace already in place.

Spacious Living Areas

The result of this thoughtful design approach is a succession of spacious and light-filled living areas at ground level. These areas provide ample room for relaxation and entertainment, catering to the needs of modern living. Additionally, the expansion of the existing subfloor spaces transforms previously dark and damp areas into a new large rumpus room and feature wine cellar, adding both functionality and charm to the home.

Preserving the Original Charm

While the project introduces modern elements and enhancements, existing spaces in the original front part of the house have been largely retained. These areas have been refreshed with new internal finishes and light fittings, preserving the charm and character of the Victorian architecture.

A Cohesive Design Palette

A new generous kitchen and dining area at the rear of the house are seamlessly integrated into the existing layout. These spaces are separated from a sunken living room by a double-sided wood fireplace and hearth, creating distinct yet connected zones within the home. The use of pale oak timbers, warm grey tiles, and stone keeps these south-facing spaces bright, while natural walnut veneer joinery and black steel-framed windows and doors add contrast and visual interest.

Conclusion

The South Terrace House project successfully redefines space by blending modern design elements with the historical context of the Victorian terrace. Through thoughtful consideration of the site’s slope and strategic use of materials and layout, Sanders & King + Chan Architecture have created a home that is both functional and visually stunning, offering residents a harmonious living environment tailored to contemporary lifestyles.
