The Splash Labs’ ambition to create its US flagship showroom within a 1930s factory unit sparked a collaborative effort with McLaren Excell. The goal was to craft a space that not only showcased products but also resonated with the brand’s commitment to design, experience, and exploration. The architects were tasked with translating this vision into an architectural masterpiece.
Harmonizing Architecture and Product
Central to the project was the need to seamlessly integrate architectural intervention with the tactile qualities of The Splash Lab’s products. The aim was to create an environment where both elements coexist harmoniously, reinforcing each other’s presence. Rather than adhering to conventional showroom formats, the design aimed to make display areas an integral part of the architectural narrative.
Establishing Spatial Hierarchy
A subtle hierarchy of positioning, materiality, and product delineated the various functions of the showroom. Monumental insertions were strategically introduced to enhance user experience and establish a clear spatial hierarchy. These interventions needed to possess sufficient tactility to command attention without overshadowing the existing building fabric.
Restoring Visual Axis
Addressing a visual disconnect between the entrance area and the main gallery, the architects reinstated the visual axis as a pivotal element of the space. Monumental archways aligned along this axis, symbolizing themes of spirituality and ritual cleansing. Each archway demarcated distinct areas, guiding visitors through the showroom journey.
Creating a Timeless Setting
The design embraced a simple and timeless format, allowing The Splash Lab’s products to shine. A muted palette of materials emphasized light, proportion, and surface qualities, enhancing the user experience. The exploration of tectonic relationships and surface textures further enriched the material palette.
Monumental Appearance
To amplify the monumental appearance of the insertions, Danish format brickwork bonded with a German ‘Ziegal Geschlammt’ mortar application was chosen. This technique blurred the unit rhythm of the bricks, creating a monolithic surface. A concrete plinth provided a grounded foundation, juxtaposing the rough permanence of the brickwork with the smoothness of display backdrops.
The Splash Lab LA Showroom stands as a testament to the successful fusion of architectural innovation and brand ethos, offering visitors an immersive and unforgettable experience in the world of design and exploration.
