Located in the former Yorkshire Brewery Tower in Collingwood, ULA Cafe by SuiL seamlessly blends elements of the past with contemporary design. This project exemplifies the coexistence of history, present, and future, honoring the heritage building’s legacy while embracing modernity.

Vision and Design Approach

The client envisioned transforming the heritage space into a neighborhood café while leveraging the unique character of the original building. The design approach focused on creating new elements that respond to existing features harmoniously. Newly built forms echo the architectural language of individual windows and doors, establishing connections between the interior and exterior spaces.

Attention to Detail and Materiality

Detailing was paramount to ensure the seamless integration of new elements with the heritage walls. The choice of counter color and break line detail was carefully considered to complement the existing walls while serving various functional purposes. Cement render finish added solidity and a timeless aesthetic, while bluestone-like porcelain tiles continued the external floor finishes, preserving the heritage tower base. Moreover, this design strategy created a buffer space to protect the old building structure from moisture and dampness.

Integration of Lighting and Spatial Features

New track lighting was strategically positioned at the height of the original feature steel beams, enhancing the ambiance of the space while respecting its historical context. The innovative sliding door engages with the feature graffiti pattern on the wall, adding a unique touch to the café environment.

Coexistence of Historical and Modern Elements

ULA Cafe exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of historical elements and contemporary interventions. Through thoughtful form, materiality, color, and attention to detail, the project invites patrons to engage in a dialogue that transcends time. By celebrating heritage features while ensuring conservation and protection, the design achieves a balance between humility and elegance.

Conclusion: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

In conclusion, ULA Cafe by SuiL demonstrates that heritage sites can be respectfully updated without compromising their integrity. The project emphasizes continuity, coexistence, and timelessness, creating a seamless integration of old and new. By preserving the past while embracing the future, the design fosters a deeper connection to history and enriches the café experience for visitors.
