The Translucence House, a project by Fougeron Architecture, epitomizes a transformative renovation and addition, breathing new life into a previously ill-conceived structure. Positioned on a remarkable site atop a bluff overlooking the city and the bay, this urban retreat caters to the needs of a young family while minimizing its environmental impact.

Embracing the Site’s Potential

Situated on a double-wide lot adjacent to a community garden, the site offers a rare oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. Originally developed in the 1960s, subsequent renovations left the house disjointed and out of sync with contemporary living standards. Fougeron Architecture saw an opportunity to reimagine the space and restore its connection to its surroundings.

Design Approach: Clarity and Openness

The design strategy focused on clarity and openness, achieved through a meticulous surgical approach. Retaining essential structural elements, the architects introduced new features to redefine the relationships between rooms. Glass and natural light play pivotal roles in diffusing and unifying the space, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.

Architectural Interventions

A key intervention is the insertion of an all-glass pavilion housing a dining and family room. Seamlessly integrating with the rear yard, this pavilion offers panoramic views of the bay and surrounding hills. Trellises of aluminum and wood provide shade while preserving the sense of expansiveness.

Curved Forms and Playful Elements

Throughout the house, curved forms and playful elements add dynamism to the rectilinear structure. A child’s fire pole connecting the floors and a curved glass shower extending into the screened front balcony exemplify this playful spirit, echoing California’s Light and Space art movement.

Harmonizing Public and Private Spaces

The front facade, composed of vertical and horizontal wood boards, creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. This wood screen, activated by shifting light from day to night, harmonizes the home’s public and private expressions, replacing an opaque street presence with a visually engaging facade.

Conclusion: A Fusion of Modernity and Nature

The Translucence House by Fougeron Architecture stands as a testament to the seamless integration of modern design principles with natural surroundings. Through thoughtful interventions and a commitment to sustainability, the project redefines urban living, offering a sanctuary of serenity amidst the bustling cityscape.
